I came across these 10 Must-Do Move-In Tasks published by Lowes.  Even though I have been in my new St. George home for four months now, it was a good checklist of things to go over.  So whether you are moving into a new home or a pre-owned home, check these things out and see what you need to do.

Here are the 10 House Checklist Must-Do Move-In Tasks:

  1.        Change locks.  Play it safe and have your locks changed just in case there are other existing keys out there.

  2.        Reprogram the garage door opener.  It’s better to be safe than sorry.  You can contact the manufacturer or go online to find steps.

  3.        Locate the water shutoff.  Find the main water shutoff as well as all outside water spigots.

  4.        Locate the main circuit breaker.  Check to make sure you understand the labels or label the circuits the way you want them to be marked.

  5.        Test the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.  Also, make sure you know where a fire extinguisher is.

  6.        Figure out a strategy to use if you get locked out of your home.  You can hide a key or leave a copy with a neighbor.  Let you family members know.

  7.        Read up on your HVAC system to feel confident about using the furnace and air conditioning.

  8.        Make a list of all your lightbulbs and buy energy efficient replacements if you need to.  Check the outdoor lights too.

  9.        Replace all toilet seats.

  10.        Make an exit plan for emergencies and share the plan with all of your family members.
